OVERCOME A COMMON OBSTACLE &
Get The Life You Want
Get The Life You Want
Can you believe that searching the New York Times for articles on "global warming" got me 15,359 hits and "climate change" got 15,076 (on June 8, anyway). For an important topic that's gotten a lot of news coverage, I don't hear a ton of conversation on the subject. Seems to be that thinking about global warming can trigger feelings most of us would rather avoid. Top ones mentioned?

Pushing away all thoughts of climate change is one common way to avoid these nasty feelings. Our mind's ability to block out certain unpleasant facts is part of the survival-instinct package we're born with.
|
Seeing this avoidance reaction for what it is – more of a reflex than an intentional choice – can help us get unstuck from a deer-in-the-headlights moment.
|
On top of that, we're hugely social animals so we like to stick with our pack. If not enough of our friends & family see an urgent need to change, maybe we won't either. Psychologists & sociologists have lots of fascinating examples & explanations about how all this works.

The good thing about our brain's amazing ability to block out bad news: it can help us get by when we're in a tough situation. The bad thing: we freeze our thoughts before we get to the most important ones – the solutions!
Focusing on solutions & what comes next is how we can get what we really want: that safe and good future for ourselves & our kids. Time to stop being sad and be awesome instead. True Story.
